TANJUNG PUTTING NATIONAL PARK

In Indonesia orangutans is only found in Borneo Island which has many tropical rain forests. The forest is a home for many species.

Tanjung Putting is one of the national parks in Indonesia where we can see orangutans in their natural habitat. It has become one of the tourism destinations. We can enjoy the jungle wildlife here. The park is home to an amazing array of wildlife including its world famous orangutans. It is also home for monkeys, birds and other wild.

Tanjung Putting National Park is situated on the west side of Central Kalimantan. The only means to reach the Park is by river boat, which is called Klotok. Klotoks are two-storeyed wooden river boats equipped with inboard or outboard motor, and are specially built to navigate through shallow waters and narrow sections of the river. They have a shallow draft and generally measure 12 meters in length by 2.5 meters width.  They normally carry goods or passengers up and down the river.

Tanjung Putting National Park is also home to sun bears, wild boars, clouded leopards, spotted cats, pythons, gibbons, porcupines and Sambar deer. We can see monkeys which may plunge from branches 10 meters or higher into the dark river, sometimes they cross directly in front of the boat.

Nowadays, the existence of orangutans has been threatened by human. The number of orangutans has been decreased. In order to protect them, the government decided to make their home Tanjung Putting as a national park.
