Lorentz National Park

Lorentz National Park is the largest national park in Southeast Asia. It is about 25,000 km2. Lorentz National Park location is in the area Panlai Regency, Jayawijaya Regency, Fak-fak and Merauke Regency, Papua Province, Indonesia. The nearest city from the national Park is Wamena. The forest in this national park is still natural original. It is representative the most complete ecosystem for biodiversity in Southeast Asia and the Pacific region.

Lorentz National Park is established on 1997 by the ministry of forestry. It became world heritage site on 1999 by UNESCO.

We can enjoy the mangroves, marine areas, tidal and freshwater swamp forest, lowland and montane rainforest, alpine tundra, and equatorial glaciers. From here, we can see Puncak Jaya, the tallest mountain in Indonesia.

There are still many parts of this national park which haven’t been explored yet. It is certain to contain many species of plants and animals as yet unknown to Western science. The knowledge of the Lorentz biota is also very poor documented.

There are 630 species of birds which have been documented. The number is about 70% of the total number of bird species in Papua. Beside that there are about 123 mammalian species.

There are eight ethnic groups that live here. They are Asmat, Amungme, Dani, Sempan, and Nduga. The number estimation of the population is varying between 6,300 and 10,000. The park’s existence is depending on the local communities. There are several conservations which are working in the Lorentz area.
